What makes PHOTOFAIRS different from other art fairs?
PHOTOFAIRS presents photography and moving image within highly curated environments in contemporary and dynamic art capitals such as Shanghai and San Francisco. Featuring hand-picked galleries, bespoke VIP programs and critically acclaimed public programs, PHOTOFAIRS prides itself on its boutique format, which allows collectors to explore the fair in a focused way.
How are the galleries selected?
PHOTOFAIRS welcomes submissions from photography and contemporary art galleries with strong photography programs. Applications for PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai & San Francisco are vetted by the Artistic Director of PHOTOFAIRS, Alexander Montague-Sparey.
What are the different sectors within PHOTOFAIRS?
PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai & San Francisco features two exhibiting sectors; Main and Platform.
What is the Main sector?
Exhibitors in the Main sector of the fair are commercial galleries representing an international program of artists.
What is Platform?
Platform is a sector dedicated to international galleries that have never previously shown in China or the United States. This sector also offers galleries a subsidised rate.
What is the Public Program?
The Public Program is the non-profit arm of PHOTOFAIRS. Curated by Alexander Montague-Sparey, Artistic Director of PHOTOFAIRS, the Public Program comprises of Conversations, Insights and Staged.
What is Insights?
Insights is an exhibition which travelled between the PHOTOFAIRS destinations and reflected international trends within photography. Insights | Shanghai 2016 and Insights | San Francisco 2017 focused on New Approaches to Photography Since 2000. This years theme is A Colour Explosion: The Rise of Contemporary Photography
The exhibition will explore the development of colour photography from the 70s through to today, whilst underlining the importance of colour photography for contemporary artists who more and more turn to the camera.
What is Conversations?
Conversations is a daily program of panel discussions and talks featuring leading experts, artists, curators, collectors and gallerists.
What is Staged?
Staged explores the relationship between photography and other art forms such as installation art, sculpture, video and painting. Participating galleries are invited to submit proposals following their acceptance
